Three cracks are visible that weren’t there before on my phone. How fortunate am I that the only real damage sustained in the wreck isn’t even on my person. I slide my thumb across the screen, and a background picture of a glorious pastel sunset winks back at me. I need to freaking do it already. I don't know why I'm stalling.

I find the name I’m looking for and press the green call button.

There’s absolutely no waiting, she picks up immediately.

“Perrin. I am so sorry. I needed a couple days to digest everything that’s happened lately and the decisions I’ve made. I didn’t mean to ghost you.” What started out as a blurted apology, turns into a trembling whisper by the end.

“Peyton. It's cool. I get it. I said a lot of things I didn't mean either. Let's hang out tomorrow and spend some quality sister time together. I miss you.” Wetness hits the corners of my eyes, and my sinuses feel thick. “Did you get the results back yet?”

Peyton lets out a choked laugh on the other end. “I would love to hang out tomorrow. I'll come pick you up at noon, and we'll go grab lunch and margaritas. But… no, I haven't gotten the results back. It's driving me insane not to know. I called this morning, and the nurse said any day now.”

“Ok. I want to know as soon as you find out. Hell, I'd love it if you waited for me to come to you before you read the results. Or hear them. However, they plan to communicate with you.”

“Okay. Okay.” She agrees.

“Pey, there was another reason I was calling. I was in a car wreck earlier today, just before lunch. I’m fine, though. A couple bruises, that’s it. And the driver was completely unscathed, too.” I use my most soothing and placating voice.

“What?” She yells directly in my ear. I pull the phone away and wince. “Why am I just now hearing about this? It’s nearly eight-thirty. That was hours and hours ago.” She huffs indignantly.

The irony is not lost on me, but I'm letting that go. I'll let her take up her big sister role since she was essentially my parent for a portion of my life.

“I was knocked out during the crash. I woke up in the hospital, and it took a while to get discharged. I had friends there, so it wasn't a big deal.” I rub my palm back and forth over the comforter. The constant friction calms me.

“Fuck, Perrin. I'll come over right now. I'll bring dinner and stay the night. We can just share your bed like we used to when we were kids.” Shuffling is loud on her end, and I know she's gathering up her stuff.

“I, uh… I'm not home right now. You'll have to pick me up from here tomorrow since I'm staying at a friend's tonight. The friend that was at the hospital with me,” I stutter out. I'm positive she knows something’s up because I never get nervous like this.
